Gers,
a changing industry
Gers has a strong farming tradition and mainly looks forward to highlighting
the department resources out of agribusiness which employs almost one
out of two industry workers, such industry contributing only for 11% to
the department added value.

The agribusiness jewels are foie gras and ready-cooked dishes factories,
which ensure Gers a gourmet reputation thanks to mail orders and counter
sales, followed by yoghurt producers, poultry slaughterhouses, ice-cream
and industrial pastry manufacturers, and diet products.
The wood and furniture channels represent a thousand jobs spread out
in the West and the North of the department.
We will also add following activities, diffusely distributed all over
the department: metallic construction, printing, hardboard industry and
a public buildings and works sector which suffered a lot but which is
recovering thanks to an improving economy situation.
Wholesale business is also dynamic thanks to its farming and wine-growing
components, and to do-it-yourself, hardware and small electric tool businesses.
Moreover, a new industry fabric is developing towards communication,
data processing and multimedia. Media and Communication New Technologies
open up wide horizons for a Department which is determined to forge ahead.
