Created under the French revolution by the law of the 5th of Brumaire
year V (October 26, 1796) which required to transfer to Department county-towns
all files of the old government services of Ancien Régime and
of bishoprics, monasteries and convents, the Department Record Office
is the oldest service with a cultural vocation of the Gers General Council.
The written heritage which
it preserves goes back from the 9th century to nowadays and represents
a documentary collection of about 10.5 km, that is to say 10 500 linear
meters. This resource is one of the most valuable ones in Midi-Pyrenees.
The Department Record Office job is to collect and sort out, arrange,
keep and restore documents, carry out communications to government services
and to individuals, develop culture through shows, lectures, publications
and the document collections which it keeps.
The Department Record Office also has a vocation to welcome funds from
individuals through donations, deposits, bequests and acquisitions.
They have a general and local history library and a Resource Centre.
They are provided with a bindery and a restoration workshop as well as with
a photo and microfilm laboratory.
