Gers, reading in the countryside

The Department Lending Library task is to develop public reading in rural environment, in all Gers cities, except for Auch which has its own library.

The Department Library action is steered toward supporting rural libraries:

. it enriches the collections of the 15 public libraries through deposits of books, discs and CD-Rom, for all ages and through road exhibitions.
. it has 3 mobile libraries which serve 270 reading-spots in the department: primary and nursery schools, secondary schools, senior citizen clubs, old people's homes...
. it advises, gives technical assistance and organizes meetings within the department network in order to train the staff in such small structures.

This system is supplemented by some specific actions carried out by the Gers General Council, such as:

. helping create new public libraries and acquire multi-media hardware,
. purchasing books from Gers editors or concerning Gascony,
. supporting workshops or demonstrations in favour of literature, as well as meetings with authors.
