Cinema: Gers, on top of the bill

Centralization, schedule, training, shooting... : la relance du cinéma dans le Gers est une belle aventure que mène depuis vingt ans, l'association Ciné 32, citée en exemple partout en France. Devenu laboratoire du septième art, le Gers cultive une vocation inattendue et montre que par-delà les enjeux économiques, la sauvegarde d'une ruralité vivante passe aussi par le combat culturel.

Gers is now the laboratory of cinema. It cultivates an unexpected vocation and shows that, beyond the economic stakes, the protection of a living rurality also runs through a cultural fight.

Today, residents and visitors can attend 16 movie theatres which are harmoniously distributed all over the department and which carry out every year consequent improvements in search of more comfort, aesthetics and acoustics.

The program quality meets the requests of the general public, but also promotes authors and more demanding works. In concrete terms, this results in privileging European cinema to the detriment of American cinema. Actually, several theatres have been awarded the "art films" label.

Some further actions are organized in Gers in favour of cinema:

.	the "Cinéma Jeunesse" ("Youth Cinema") project which makes it possible for all nursery to secondary school pupils to attend any film showing with an educational vocation, and to take part in the making of cartoons
.	the organization of film screenings together with associations caring for people with social insertion problems: young people, job seekers, RMI beneficiaries (unemployed people entitled to minimum welfare payment)
.	a card with reduced rates for such RMI beneficiaries

The " Independence and Creation " Festival which was born in 1998 and which is a growing success confirms that the defence of cinema in rural environment does not belong in the realms of fiction!
